the team that run our spaces...

meet Wayne

Hi my name is Wayne Spicer. I am the Conference Services Manager at the University looking after our dedicated Conference Centre and the portfolio of lecture theatres and suites available during the summer months.

I have been with Space with US since 2013, before joining the team I worked at a host of different conferencing venues and hotels including; Reading Football Club and the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.

I love what I do and the amazing team I work with. We all get a real buzz bringing our organisers’ events to life and seeing it all come together on the day.

I was born in the Midlands but have sold my soul and am now a proud southern boy living in Hailsham.

Hospitality is in my blood as my parents and grandparents all worked in the industry. When I was a child my Grandmother worked in a very fancy hotel with a huge reception area and chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. I loved visiting her at work and knew that one day I would work in the industry. I think it was the free mint imperials the receptionists used to sneak me that swung it.

In my spare time I am a Radio presenter. I work for a local Radio station and have my own Sunday night show, perfect for me as I love to talk and it’s a great way to end the weekend.

My ideal space would be a traditional continental Café in Venice. I’d be sat outside with a latte, just watching the world go by.

meet Heidi

Hello I’m Heidi Swain, the Deputy Conference Services Extraordinaire at Space with US! I love working with fantastic chefs (the food is amazing!), and in a team that never ceases to entertain, my boss makes me laugh on a daily basis!

I have been based at the University for 9 years and came here as an ‘office angel’ in February 2008. Before moving to Brighton I worked in Marketing for Screwfix Direct Ltd. I worked away a lot so I used to live off fried breakfasts and Yorkie bars.

My childhood was spent in the West Country living on the farm and I still remember calving a cow at 4am with my Dad. I also learned to drive a tractor before I could drive a car!

My favourite place is in Mexico, the Yucatán Peninsula. The locals are incredible and very modest with their lifestyle and the weather and beaches are beautiful. I also love Barcelona and if I ever decided to leave Brighton, it would be to move there. I need to learn Spanish first, so once I have completed my first (and last) marathon, I will use my spare time learning the language and how to play the guitar, so if the work ever dries up – I can spend my days busking in Las Ramblas.

meet Georgina

My name is Georgina Laflin and I am a Sales Coordinator within the conference team at the university. I have been with Space with US team since December 2015.

I am very lucky to work with such a fun and inspiring group of people. Every day working here is different and we all play our part to make each one better than the last.

Before joining the conference team, I worked at the Old Ship Hotel on Brighton Seafront where I gained experience of conference and events by working within the operations team.

I’m originally from Reading but moved to Brighton 5 years ago to start university and cannot see myself leaving anytime soon as I have fallen in love with the beach life. There are always things to do and place to see and you can’t beat a summer in Brighton as I am a true sun worshipper as long as the sun cream is topped up!

meet Alison

I’m Alison O’Gorman and I am the deputy general manager of the Space with US conference centre. I’m responsible for the delivery of hospitality for conferences of all shapes and sizes all over the university as well as events in the Attenborough Centre.

I have been with Space with US since January 2015 and before that I was food and beverage operations manager for several 4 star hotel chains. I’ve worked in Hotel Management in Central London, Edinburgh and Brighton. You could say I’m an expert in food and beverage service and strategy, especially when it comes to events and conferences.

I love happy people and having a laugh, work should be fun and smiling faces make for an all-round more productive team! I have a great group of people working with me to ensure all our conference organisers and guests go away with smiles on their faces.

I’m originally from Scotland but grew up in London and lived in the South of France for 8 years, I’ve been around a bit! My heart still belongs in Edinburgh but Australia, down on the great ocean road is 100% my favourite place to be.
